Your Family mission statement is simply your vision of what you want your family to be about.
You may not feel that you have ‘arrived’ yet and that your family isn’t everything you want it to be, but that doesn’t matter. Your family mission statement is all about what you as a family aspire to, and it’s something that you can create to remind all of you as a family to build towards being what you want to be.
So, to get you thinking about what you’d like it to say – ask the family some of these questions :
– what would we like others to say about us as a family?
– what do we want to be known for?
– what is important to us?
– what does our ‘ideal’ family look like; ideal for you is individual to you
Get everyone involved, from the youngest to the oldest as that way there’ll be a greater sense of ownership and your kids will have something to work towards.
This is what we did – we regularly have family nights together, so we used this as an opportunity for a family night activity.
Armed with an A3 sheet of white cardboard, coloured pens and snacks (to help keep everyone motivated :-)), we sat around the dinner table and asked our kids what they felt we as a family should be.
They came up with a number of the ideas themselves and really enjoyed writing it and colouring it in. For younger children who can’t yet write, you can just get them to draw a picture of what they think the word represents.
This is the finished product!
