When I realised this recently, I wondered why I hadn’t thought of it before. Its so simple. There is one very easy way to save money, and I sooo need to improve in this area myself (and teach my kids the same thing).
What is it? Quite simply, LOOK AFTER the things you have! There are 2 key ways we can do this, which equally we can easily get wrong:
1. Put things where they belong when you’ve finished using them. Have you heard the expression ‘a place for everything, and everything in its place’? When we fail to do this, we can’t find things when we need them, and not only do we spend a lot of time looking for them, but we end up wasting money buying another just like it. NOTE : That’s why my son is wearing about 7 pairs of 3D glasses in the picture above – because I forgot we had them already and bought more each time we went to the movies…
2. Look after things by servicing, cleaning, repairing and maintaining things well. When I haven’t been diligent to get my children to put something away straight after using it ( like a board game), pieces have inevitably got lost and we’ve stopped playing with it, or thrown it away. Not very clever.
This also tells our children that they can be careless with things, and there’ll be no consequences, and it fails to teach them the important lesson of diligence. It will also help them to look after and appreciate everything they have and diligence will carry over into other areas of their life.
So, what were you about to throw away that you could clean or repair instead?
